Warehouse
Definition
A warehouse is intended for storing materials (raw materials, products, goods…). In general, it involves the long-term preservation of items in an unchanged state. Warehouse spaces are used by industrial, commercial, agricultural, and other commercial organizations. They can vary in form and size, from small office storage areas to massive warehouse facilities.
Warehouse Operations
The main activities in a warehouse include receiving goods, inspecting them, logistics (between different warehouse zones), storage, order fulfillment, shipping, and managing and reporting inventory status.
Warehouse Components
There are many factors to consider when designing an optimal warehouse. Initially, several factors need to be taken into account, such as:
- stored product,
- movement of materials or products,
- available storage space,
- presence of storage equipment, such as shelving and racking systems,
- transportation,
- human factor (personnel),
- management system and company policies.
The warehouse’s function in the supply system leads to a classification into several groups. The most common are shipping and transit warehouses.
Warehouses can be distinguished based on their function
Central warehouse: stores finished products of the company
Commercial warehouse: characterized by a large number of suppliers and customers
Shipping warehouse: stores finished products ready for sale or shipment
Transit warehouse: primarily located where goods are transferred from one location to another, e.g., at ports
