Just-in-time transportation
Definition
There are two basic logistics approaches: the just-in-time method and the just-in-case method. Just-in-time (JIT) transportation is an approach focused on minimizing inventory levels and reducing costs by delivering goods exactly when and where they are needed. This model differs significantly from traditional warehousing methods, where companies store large volumes of inventory to cover future demand. Under the JIT approach, only the amount of goods that is actually required is used.
What makes it specific?
The JIT method requires precise planning and synchronization of deliveries so that materials or products arrive just before they are distributed for further processing or sale. This process demands detailed coordination between suppliers, carriers, and customers.
One of the main advantages of this method is that goods are not stored for long periods, which reduces the risk of damage and obsolescence. The JIT approach also encourages suppliers to deliver higher-quality products, as defects or substandard components can lead to production stoppages or delivery delays.
